The Dark Side ....Should you go there?

There comes a time in every blondes' life when we decide to take a walk on the dark side.  By this I mean, becoming a sexy brunette.  I am a natural blond.  Born a toe-head, I quickly grew into a gross dishwater, ash blond until my first set of hi-lights for my 14th birthday (thanks mom, and Steven Smith at Umberto Salon in Beverly Hills).

Throughout high school I dilly dallied between blond and dark, but because of my lack of knowledge, the "dark" always ended up looking, too grey, to gold and uneven.  Now, after my extensive color training, I know that this is a HUGE process.

I'll give you the "readers digest" version on why this is so hard.

When you're a blond (natural or artificial) your hair is essentially pigment-less. The process to going dark, is to re-deposit the colors that make brown, into your hair.  A perfect, even, brown is an equal mixture of all 3 primary colors; Red, Blue and Yellow. Are you following? Then you can tweak the tone of your desired brown by adding more of what you want. (A burgundy tint, a golden brown, a cool brown...)  I am not kidding when I say that hair color is a science, and should ALWAYS be under the supervision of a licensed professional.

A friend of mine, forwarded me an article about blonde's going brunette to be taken more seriously in the workplace.  "38% of naturally blond respondents said they believe their hair color has in some way hindered them in the job market."  This survey also indicates that "62% of those polled said they believe brunettes appear more professional than blondes in the workplace." (Source: UPI.com)

This is interesting.  We've all known that a certain stigma has always been attached to blondes. Dumb, airheads, bimbos, etc... Is this close-minded stereotype really infiltrating women in the workplace?  And, if so,  are men also submitted to this hair color discrimination?

From personal experience, on both ends of the spectrum, I do know that I get more male attention as a brunette.  But that could also be because I FEEL sexier as a brunette.

However, I cant comment on the workplace, because I am a hair stylist!  If I walked into my salon with bright pink hair, the first thing my co-workers would comment on, would probably be my new Marc Jacobs ankle boots!

So, with all of this being said, I think it's all about what works for you.  What do you feel better as? A blond? A brunette? A sexy redhead?  When you feel great about your appearance, every aspect of your life is packed with self-confidence and FABULOSITY.
